North Korea says new nuclear test will be part of fight against U.S.

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea said Thursday that it plans to carry out a new nuclear test and more long-range rocket launches, all of which it said are a part of a new phase of confrontation with the United States.
The North's National Defense Commission said the moves would feed into an "upcoming all-out action" that would target the United States, "the sworn enemy of the Korean people."
Carried by the state media, the comments are the latest defiant flourish from the reclusive North Korean regime, whose young leader, Kim Jong Un, has upheld his father's policy of pursuing a military deterrent and shrugging off international pressure.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Thursday there are no "outward indications" that North Korea is about to conduct a nuclear test, but he admitted it would be hard to determine that in advance.
"They have the capability, frankly, to conduct these tests in a way that makes it very difficult to determine whether or not they are doing it," he said in a Pentagon press conference.
"We are very concerned with North Korea's continuing provocative behavior," Panetta said, but he added that the United States is "fully prepared" to deal with any provocations.North Korea's statement followed a U.N. Security Council resolution submitted by the United States and approved Tuesday that condemned a recent rocket launch by the North and expanded existing sanctions.Pyongyang's threatening statement "should have been the expected outcome" from the U.N. decision, said Daniel Pinkston, senior analyst for the International Crisis Group covering Northeast Asia.
"I think they are completely outraged and insulted by it," he said. North Korea's statement prompted France and Great Britain to express exasperation with the secretive regime. Britain's mission to the United Nations called on North Korean leaders to "refrain from further provocation." France said it "deplores" North Korea's statement, telling its leaders that they need not to threaten, but instead to work toward dismantling their nuclear and missile programs.
In addition to Panetta's statement, the United States added sanctions against more North Korean bank officials and a business linked to the regime's nuclear weapons program. The Treasury Department announcement targets two Beijing-based representatives of Tanchon Commercial Bank and a company -- Leader (Hong Kong) International Trading Limited -- that the U.S. government says shipped machinery and equipment in support of North Korea's nuclear program. The organizations are "part of the web of banks, front companies and government agencies that support North Korea's continued proliferation activities," said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen.

The organizations are "part of the web of banks, front companies and government agencies that support North Korea's continued proliferation activities," said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen.
"By continuing to expose these entities, and the individuals who assist them, we degrade North Korea's ability to use the international financial system for its illicit purposes," he said. North Korea, which often issues bellicose statements in its state media, said Thursday that it rejects all Security Council resolutions concerning it, describing the most recent resolution as "the most dangerous phase of the hostile policy" toward it.
Analyst: Threat meant as a deterrence
The threats toward the United States, a constant theme in the North's propaganda, have more to do with deterrence than a desire for full conflict, Pinkston said.
"I don't believe they have the capability, the intention or the will to invade or destroy the United States," he said. "They wish to deter interference from the U.S. or any outside powers. "North Korea's successful rocket launch last month nonetheless changed the strategic calculations for the United States, showing that the North's missile program is advancing despite an array of heavy sanctions imposed on it.
Analysts say it still has a lot of work to do to master the technology necessary to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile or accurately target it. At the same time, Pyongyang has been hinting for a while that a new nuclear test could be in the cards. Just before the North sent out its latest hostile statement Thursday, a U.S. State Department official was telling reporters in Seoul that Washington hoped Pyongyang wouldn't go ahead. "We think that that would be a mistake, obviously," said Glyn Davies, the U.S. special envoy on North Korea. "We call on North Korea, as does the entire international community, not to engage in any further provocations."
North Korea has carried out two previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, both of which were condemned by the United Nations. Pyongyang didn't say Thursday when exactly it would carry out a third test, but it could happen "at any time," according to Pinkston. He said it is hard for anybody outside the North Korean nuclear sector to know whether the country is technically ready to carry out the test, but that politically, "it seems an appropriate time."
Demands unlikely to sway North
South Korean defense officials said last year that they believed the North was in a position to carry out a new test whenever leaders in Pyongyang gave the green light. North Korea's nuclear program is "an element of threat to peace not only for Northeast Asia but also for the world," Park Soo-jin, deputy spokeswoman for the South Korean Unification Ministry, said Thursday. "North Korea should immediately stop its nuclear test and other provocation and should choose a different path by cooperating with the international community," Park said. That appears unlikely at this stage, though.
After a failed long-range rocket launch in April, North Korea ignored international condemnation and carried out a second attempt last month. That one succeeded in putting a satellite in orbit, Pyongyang's stated objective. But the launch was widely considered to be a test of ballistic missile technology. And it remains unclear whether the satellite, which the North insists is for peaceful purposes, is functional. Both North Korea's previous nuclear tests took place weeks or months after long-range rocket launches. Those tests were carried out under the rule Kim Jong Il, the deceased father of the current leader, and the man who channeled huge amounts of money into North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs.
Kim Jong Il died in December 2011 after 17 years in power, during which the North Korean people became increasingly impoverished and malnourished. Economically, the country relies heavily on trade with its major ally, China. China, which voted in favor of the U.N. Security Council resolution this week, appealed for calm on Thursday. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei urged North Korea and the West to "keep calm, remain cautious and refrain from any action that might escalate the situation in the region."
The office of the South Korean president-elect, Park Geun-hye, said Friday that she would soon send a delegation to visit the United States. "Issues of common interest will be discussed," said Yoon Chang-jung, a spokesman for Park, without specifying whether that included North Korea.

20 People You Need Out of Your Life

We all have one or two “friends” who drag us down instead of make us better. If you have someone in your life who’s taking more than they’re giving, it might be time to go your separate ways.

The Office Gossip

Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break in your day to get the scoop on who’s smooching who and who’s getting the pink slip. But is the office gossip stopping by your desk way too often?
“The office gossip can be a destructive force in your life, as this person calls your own integrity into question in the eyes of your superiors and coworkers,” says Karen Hylen, Ph.D, primary therapist at Summit Malibu Treatment Center. “Without this type of person in her life, a woman can grow stronger in her feelings of self-worth and be an integral part of the office environment, rather than an outsider looking in.”

The Ex who Calls for Sex

Sure, it’s nice to have a sex buddy on speed dial, but is his presence in your life adding or taking away value?
“A woman who keeps an ex in her life purely for sexual reasons is essentially building up a barrier to her own happiness,” says Hylen. “By cutting this person out of her life, she can move past old feelings and emotional attachments and in turn open her heart and mind to new experiences and relationships.”

The Sad Sack

You don’t really like her, but you get together out of guilt. The truth is, that’s not good for her or yourself.
“Women experience emotions on a very visceral level, taking in their surroundings and feeding off others energy,” says Hylen. “It’s more effective emotionally for a woman to have people in her life who exude positive energy, rather than those who can drain her of the vital life energy she needs to maintain her own quality of life.”
The painful truth: You have to give the Sad Sack some space and find friends that are on your level.

The Guy On the Fence

He says he loves spending time with you but he won’t put a ring on it -- or even let you leave a toothbrush at his place! It’s time to tell yourself that you’re worth being “the one” -- if not to him, then someone else.
“Being with a man who won’t commit to you or take you seriously as a woman can result in low self-esteem and depressive thoughts or behaviors,” says Hylen. “A woman is better off being with someone who does not deny her those emotions, which are critical to her overall mental health and well-being.”

The Pitier

There’s always that sibling, cousin or aunt who is forever trying to fix your life. They mean well, but seriously… buzz off!
“A pitying relative who tries to help you in various areas of your life can lead to a belief that you are not self-reliant or independent,” says Hylen. “Not having this person in your life will allow you to make your own mistakes and be accountable for them so you don’t repeat them in the future.”

The Frenemy

She’s your friend, but also your arch enemy. How is this fun?
“Women deserve friendships in which they support each other’s triumphs as opposed to bringing each other down,” says Jessica LeRoy, psychotherapist and founder of Center for the Psychology of Women. “Some women who are a bit more insecure may believe that they deserve this type of friendship, or that this is normal female behavior. In reality, supporting each other makes us feel much better about ourselves and our friends.”

The Half-Assed Friend

She forgets to return calls for months, doesn’t acknowledge your special occasions and is generally MIA. When you do make plans, she’s always rescheduling at the last minute or showing up super late.
“You should dump this ‘friend’ because she does not respect your time or your life,” says LeRoy. “You need to spend that time with those who do appreciate you as a friend and who are interested in your life.”
The verdict: Time to move on to someone who has friendship to give.

The "Old Friend"

Maybe it’s a friend from high school or a different time in your life, but if all you have to talk about is the past, it can get old pretty quick.
“It’s great to have friends from your past, but if that is all you have to connect on, you’re not moving forward with your lives or making new memories,” says LeRoy. “Live in the present and spend time with people you would like to make new memories with.”
The next time she calls to make plans take a pass and spend the time with someone in your present -tense!

The Schemer

From asking you to help her spy on her ex to involving you in her get-rich-quick schemes, she’s always trying to make you an accomplice to her shady plans. You might want to spend your time with someone who has more lofty goals and aspirations!
“What are you really gaining from this friendship?” asks LeRoy. “It sounds like this person only wants a sidekick who will take the fall with her. You have better things to do with your time.”

The Bad Influence

Sometimes a bad influence can be fun, but this person just brings out the worst in you -- from bad eating habits to low-self esteem.
“When you only have one thing in common with a friend, and that one thing is not very healthy, it’s time to ask yourself: Is that how I want to be spending my time?” says LeRoy. “Why not spend time with people who you can indulge with occasionally but you also connect with on other levels?”
Next time you befriend someone ask yourself: Does this person raise me up or bring me down?

The Hot Mess

You’re always scraping this friend off the floor -- literally and figuratively. A night out with her is full of surprises -- in a bad way.
“If you’re the one always bailing your friend out of difficult situations then you're the one dealing with the hot mess, not her,” says Barbara Neitlich, L.C.S.W., a Beverly Hills psychotherapist. “Once you release this type of friend out of your life, you will truly recognize how this individual often drew the mental (and sometimes) physical life right out of you.”
Remember, you can’t fix her life until she’s ready to help herself.

Your Gazillion Facebook Friends

If you’re spending all your time on the computer, chances are you’re missing out on real life.
“Shut off the computer, get off the couch and jump into this game we call life,” says Neitlich. “You are better off having a few true friends that you can confide in rather than a bunch of Facebook friends you barely know. Your true friends will stand by you when you really need them. Your Facebook friends may simply log out!”
Facebook is a fun pastime, just be sure not to let those online friends take the place of real life ones.

The Broke Buddy

Whether it’s a friend always asking you to spot her at dinner (and never paying you back) or a relative who expects you to pay for his life, remember you are a person and not an ATM.
“Get rid of those who don’t pay their way,” says Neitlich. “In time you end up building resentment for always having to be the one to pay. Cutting the cord with these folks allows you to stand your ground as a woman who is savvy and mindful of her money!”
Think of all the things you can do with that extra cash once you get this person out of your life!

The Office Husband

One or both of you are married but you have a pretty serious flirtation going on.
“Set boundaries,” says Neitlich. “Stop engaging in the playful banter. You're better off moving away from this type of temptation, as it almost always ends in disaster.”
Even if you swear you’ll never act on your feelings, it’s better not to go there in the first place!

The Snob

She makes you feel bad about your clothes, your car and your staycation. Friends don’t let friends feel like less-thans!
“When you consistently allow someone to make you feel badly about yourself, you turn a great deal of mental power over to them,” says Neitlich. “Most of us are pretty critical of ourselves. Do we really need a ‘friend’ who is so critical of us?”

The SWF

She wishes she had your looks, your hubs, your adorable children…your life. Um, creepy.
“This woman is a time bomb waiting to go off because she can only take so much drooling over what you have,” says Carole Lieberman, MD, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist and award-winning author. “She will change from sucking-up to stealing your designer duds…or even your husband.”

The Judge Judy

She gives unsolicited advice even though you’ve politely asked her to stop. There’s no reason to continue being held in contempt of her court.
“Too much time spent in her company will make you doubt every decision you’ve made,” says Dr. Lieberman. “She wants to give you a life sentence of insecurity without parole.”
Find a friend who’s cool with letting you make your own choices -- even if she disagrees with them.

The Bitter Betty

Everything is negative in her life and spending time with her makes you feel like life sucks.
“Bitter people are bad for your health,” says Lieberman. “If you want negativity in your life, you can read the headlines and do away with her.”
Life’s too short for this type of attitude. It’s time to break up!

The Backhander

She gives you compliments that somehow also take you down a notch. How does she do that?!
“This so-called friend is passive-aggressive and not to be trusted,” says Lieberman. “She’ll smile while she’s twisting the knife in deeper.”
The next time she gives you a backhanded compliment, show her to your front door.

The Competitor

Whether it’s who took the nicer vacation or who has better parenting skills, she’s always trying to one up you.
“It’s exhausting to try to be friends with The Competitor -- and not really worth it,” says Lieberman. “She’s just using you to try to feel better about her poor, pathetic self.”
Seek out friends who support you and you’ll be a whole lot happier in all aspects of your life.

With BlackBerry 10, struggling phone maker hopes for a comeback

'The Cosby Show': Where are they now?

Tempestt Bledsoe

We've missed having Tempestt Bledsoe in our living rooms since she played "The Cosby Show's" Vanessa Huxtable. But thanks to NBC's "Guys With Kids," the actress is back on the small screen this fall. Like her former TV mom Clair Huxtable, Bledsoe's character Marny is a working, no-nonsense mom.

Bill Cosby
After playing Cliff Huxtable, Bill Cosby starred in "The Cosby Mysteries," "Cosby," and hosted "Kids Say the Darndest Things." He appeared in "Ghost Dad," "The Meteor Man" and "Jack," and wrote and produced the 2004 live-action comedy "Fat Albert," based on the cartoon character he created.

Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia Rashad, who played mom Clair Huxtable, teamed up with her on-screen hubby again for "Cosby" and guest-starred on "Touched by an Angel" and "Everybody Hates Chris." Rashad hit the big screen in 2010's "Just Wright" and "For Colored Girls." She earned a Tony Award in 2004 for her role in "A Raisin in the Sun." She'll next appear in Lifetime's "Steel Magnolias," which premieres in October.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner
When Malcolm-Jamal Warner's run as Theo Huxtable ended, the actor lent his voice to popular cartoon "The Magic School Bus." He's starred in series including "Malcolm & Eddie," "Jeremiah" and "Listen Up," and released two albums. He plays an English professor on the BET sitcom "Reed Between the Lines" and recurring character Andre Bennett on NBC's "Community."

Lisa Bonet
Lisa Bonet appeared in "Enemy of the State," "High Fidelity" and "Biker Boyz" after her turn as Denise Huxtable. She'll next appear in 2013's "Road to Paloma" alongside husband Jason Momoa. Bonet and her daughter with Lenny Kravitz, Zoë, have appeared in "It's Kind of a Funny Story" and "X-Men: First Class."

Sabrina Le Beauf
Sabrina Le Beauf had roles in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Cosby" and "Fatherhood" after playing Sondra Huxtable on the NBC series. In 2009, she played Leila in the thriller "The Stalker Within."

Keshia Knight Pulliam
In 1986, at just 6 years old, Keshia Knight Pulliam received an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actress for her role as Rudy Huxtable. She appeared in 2005's "Beauty Shop" and "The Gospel," as well as 2009's "Madea Goes to Jail." She played Miranda on Tyler Perry's "House of Payne" and competed on reality shows like "Celebrity Fear Factor" and "The Mole."

Joseph C. Phillips
Joseph C. Phillips appeared on "The District" and "General Hospital" after playing Martin, Olivia's dad and Denise's husband. Phillips, who has guest-starred on "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," will next appear in Chris Stokes' "Boogie Town."

Raven-Symoné
Olivia is just one of Raven-Symoné's many cheek-pinching roles. She appeared in "The Little Rascals," on "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper," in two "Doctor Dolittle" films and the TV movie "Zenon" before starring in "That's So Raven." She later headlined the short-lived "State of Georgia" and played Deloris Van Cartier in "Sister Act" on Broadway.

Geoffrey Owens
Since playing Sondra's husband Elvin, Geoffrey Owens has guest-starred on series like "Las Vegas," "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." He was reunited with his "Cosby Show" co-star Raven-Symoné's when he appeared on "That's So Raven" in 2007. Owens now teaches an acting class at New York City's HB Studio, according to the performing arts schools' website.

Erika Alexander
Erika Alexander traded in Pam Tucker for Maxine Shaw when she started work on "Living Single" in 1993. After the show's five seasons, Alexander appeared on "Judging Amy," "Street Time" and "In Plain Sight." She most recently guest-starred on "Suburgatory" and "Suits."

Earle Hyman
Earle Hyman has appeared on "All My Children," "Cosby" and "Twice in a Lifetime" since playing Cliff's dad Russell on "The Cosby Show."

Clarice Taylor
Clarice Taylor, who played Cliff's mom Anna, appeared in "Sommersby" and "Smoke" after the series went off the air in 1992. Taylor died in 2011 at 93.

Shakira, Gerard Pique welcome baby boy

You might think of Italy's fashion capital when you hear the word Milan, but pop singer Shakira and soccer star Gerard Pique say that isn't what they had in mind when they named their baby boy.
Milan Pique Mebarak was born at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday in Barcelona, Spain, according to an announcement posted on Shakira's website. Mebarak is Shakira's seldom-used surname.
"The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification," the announcement said.
NacIó el bebé de Shakira y Piqué
The 35-year-old Colombian singer first revealed her pregnancy in September, canceling a scheduled weekend concert appearance at a music festival in Las Vegas.
Last week, a black-and-white photo on her website showed a pregnant Shakira, wearing a bikini top, standing beside her 25-year-old boyfriend, who plays for Spain's FC Barcelona.
The couple called for donations to UNICEF as part of a "world baby shower" for them to raise money for gifts such as polio vaccines, therapeutic food and rehydration salts "for the benefit of babies everywhere."
While their son isn't on the soccer field yet, on Tuesday, Shakira's website said, "Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth."
Milan, the couple's first child, weighed approximately 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
"Both mother and child are in excellent health," the announcement said.

Carried by the state media, the comments are the latest defiant flourish from the reclusive North Korean regime, whose young leader Kim Jong Un has upheld his father's policy of pursuing a military deterrent and shrugging off international pressure.
The defense commission statement follows a United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday that condemned a recent recent rocket launch by North Korea and expanded existing sanctions.
The North's angry statement "should have been the expected outcome" from the U.N. decision, said Daniel Pinkston, senior analyst for the International Crisis Group covering Northeast Asia.
"I think they are completely outraged and insulted by it," he said.
North Korea, which often issues bellicose statements in its state media, said Thursday that it rejected all Security Council resolutions concerning it.
It described this week's resolution as "the most dangerous phase of the hostile policy toward the DPRK," using the abbreviated version of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
"They wish to deter interference from the U.S. or any outside powers."
Analysts had already cast doubt last year on North Korea's claims that its missiles could reach the United States.
Just before the North sent out its latest hostile statement Thursday, a U.S. State Department official was telling reporters in Seoul that Washington hoped that Pyongyang wouldn't carry out another nuclear test.
"We think that that would be a mistake, obviously," said Glyn Davies, the U.S. special envoy on North Korea. "We call on North Korea, as does the entire international community, not to engage in any further provocations."
North Korea has carried out two previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, both of which were condemned by the U.N.
Pyongyang didn't say Thursday when exactly it would carry out a third test, but it could happen "at any time," according to Pinkston.
He said that it was hard for anybody outside the North Korean nuclear sector to know if the country is technically ready to carry out the test, but that politically, "it seems an appropriate time."
Demands unlikely to sway North
South Korean defense officials said last year that they believed the North had been in a position to carry out a new test whenever leaders in Pyongyang gave the green light.
North Korea's nuclear program is "an element of threat to peace not only for Northeast Asia but also for the world," Park Soo-jin, deputy spokeswoman for the South Korean Unification Ministry said Thursday.
And it remains unclear if the satellite, which the North insists is for peaceful purposes, is functional.

Celeb Style We're Iffy About: Likes or Yikes?

Kim Kardashian: Peeking Out

We'll have to blame Kim Kardashian's pregnancy brain for choosing this scary number! After enjoying dinner in Miami on Jan. 6, the expectant reality star steps out in a too-tight strapless dress and a blazer over her shoulders. We're all for showing off a baby bump, but the clingy material and embellished cutout on Kim's chest draw too much attention to her curves.

Kerry Washington: Mix and Match

Surely the kooky patterns on Kerry Washington's dress once belonged to three separate outfits, right? It's the only way to make sense of the star's fashion choice, which she wore at the Django Unchained photocall in Rome on Jan. 4. Part flamenco dancer and part boardroom chic, this mismatched number has us scratching our heads.

Katharine McPhee: Dazzling Dud

We've got to hand it to Katharine McPhee for trying something new! The Smash star rocks a glittering see-through pants and a low-cut blazer at the NBC Winter Press Tour in Pasadena on Jan. 6, that's certainly eye-catching. We're thinking you'll either love it or hate it.

Snooki: Riding High

We understand that Snooki wants to add inches to her small frame -- but those platform pumps look like they need training wheels! The reality star arrives for an episode of Extra in L.A. on Jan. 7 in seriously high heels, a white summery dress (in winter!) and extra-long red hair extensions. We love that Snooks has a unique sense of style, but we'd prefer leopard print over this unseasonal style.

Fergie: Going for Gold

Fergie's metallic New Year's Eve dress (which she wore while cohosting Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve) is definitely festive -- we're just not sure if it's fashionable. Decked out in head-to-toe gold, Fergie looks like she belongs on the top of a trophy. (And those puffy sleeves aren't helping!)

Nicki Minaj: Busting Out

'Tis the season... to be risque! Even though we're used to Nicki Minaj's scandalous outfits, this ensemble (which she wore at her Christmas Extravaganza in N.Y.C. on Dec. 25) still raises our eyebrows. If the curve-hugging spandex wasn't bad enough, all of that cleavage definitely is!

J-Woww: Bedroom Behavior

Come on, J-Woww, we know you're classier than this! Although the former Jersey Shore star has a knack for flaunting her bod in front of the cameras, this slinky mini (which she wore at the X Factor season finale in L.A. on Dec. 19) looks way too much like lingerie to be red-carpet appropriate. And what's with those booties? Her feet look like they've been mummified!

Jenna Dewan-Tatum: Baby Blue

Jenna Dewan-Tatum sure can pull off maternity clothes! The expectant star arrives at the VH1 Divas concert in L.A. on Dec. 16 wearing a light blue, floor-length gown. Although the actress might be showing off her assets a bit too much in this strapless number, we think the mom-to-be has a healthy glow in this flattering selection. What do you think of Jenna's choice?

Dynamic Duos: 14 Food Combos That Can Improve Your Life

Green Tea + Lemon = A Healthier Heart

Green tea has been linked to a reduced risk of heart attacks, thanks to catechins, the brew’s powerful antioxidants. But studies show only about 20 percent of these healthful compounds are available for our bodies to absorb. The good news: Recently, when scientists added lemon juice to green tea, the availability of health-enhancing catechins skyrocketed to a whopping 80 percent.

Broccoli + Tomatoes = Cancer Control

Broccoli and tomatoes are both cancer-fighting all-stars, but research reveals eating them together may offer even more protection. In a recent study, scientists found consuming tomato and broccoli at the same time was more effective at slowing the growth of cancerous prostate tumors than eating either vegetable alone.
Stay-Well Strategy: The amount of produce used in the study translates to about one and a half cups of broccoli and two and a half cups of fresh tomato (or one cup of tomato sauce). To tap into their potent powers, order a pizza generously topped with broccoli or sprinkle some florets over your next plate of spaghetti.

Red Bell Peppers + Black Beans = Improved Immunity

Eating more meatless meals lately to do your heart (and the planet) a favor? You’ll absorb more immune-boosting plant iron by adding in some red bell peppers. That’s because the iron in picks like beans exists in a form called non-heme iron that’s harder for your body to absorb than the iron found in red meat (heme iron). But, adding a dose of vitamin C-rich produce like red peppers converts the iron into a type that’s easier for the body to use, explains registered dietitian Heidi McIndoo, author of the book, When to Eat What.
Stay-Well Strategy: In one study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women absorbed nearly three times more iron from their meal by adding just 63 milligrams of vitamin C. This amount translates into about a half cup of chopped red bell peppers. To tap into their healing powers, toss these health-enhancing peppers into your next pot of chili.

Eggs + Mango = A Firmer Facade

Want to improve the overall look and strength of your skin? Try consuming this power couple. Eggs are naturally rich in two special amino acids (building blocks of protein) that are essential for the formation of skin-plumping collagen. “And foods rich in vitamin C, like mango, work with these acids to boost collagen production. This helps build back lost stores in the body, which can significantly improve the appearance of skin,” explains Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian in New York City.
Stay-Well Strategy: To give a boost to your next breakfast, pair an omelet with a cup of fresh mango chunks, which supply nearly an entire day’s supply of vitamin C.

Green Tea + Black Pepper = A Whittled Waistline

Forget drastic diets: At your next meal, sip a cup of green tea and shake some black pepper over your entree. “A study recently found that the combo boosts the absorption of EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied to calorie burning, by a whopping 130 percent,” explains registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, author of the new book Cinch!: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds, and Lose Inches. Bonus: According to research published in Nutrition Journal, people who drank green tea with their meal reported feeling more full and were less likely to want a second helping than those who drank plain water. Experts say the compounds in green tea can affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness.
Stay-Well Strategy: Studies say as little as a half-teaspoon of black pepper can increase the absorption of tea’s beneficial compounds, so brew a cup of tea to sip, then take out your mill and get grinding!

Radicchio + Kale = A Stronger Skeleton

Cup for cup, kale is the king of calcium (it contains three times more than spinach). However, food scientists say you’ll soak up even more of this bone-building mineral by combining kale with some radicchio. Why? The crimson veggie is a rich source of inulin, a carbohydrate that naturally enhances calcium absorption in the intestines, according to a recent study in the journal Nutrition Research.

Avocado + Green Salad = Complexion Protection

You’ll absorb more skin-protecting plant compounds called carotenoids from your veggie salad by adding a little avocado. “Carotenoids reduce free radical damage to effectively protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays,” explains Glassman. In a recent study at Ohio State University, people who ate avocado in their salad of lettuce, spinach, and carrots absorbed up to 15 times more carotenoids than those who didn’t eat their salads with avocado.  Studies show carotenoids require some fat to be optimally absorbed by the body, which means avocados, which contain solid stores of healthful monounsaturated fats, healthfully fit the bill.
Stay-Well Strategy: To nab this nutrition perk, slice a half of an avocado into your next green salad.

Yogurt + Bran Cereal = Better Digestion

This breakfast is a natural immunity booster. Full of good bacteria, yogurt acts as a probiotic. It encourages healthy bacteria to flourish in your digestive tract, keeping sickness-causing bugs at bay. But probiotics work even better when paired with the prebiotics found in wheat bran. Why? Prebiotics act as nourishment for probiotics, helping them better thrive in the gut so they can do their immunity-boosting magic, says registered dietitian Dave Grotto, author of the book, 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.
Stay-Well Strategy: To get in on this good-gut action, first look for probiotic-rich yogurts that sport the label “live and active cultures.”  Then, mix one cup of this yogurt with three quarters of a cup of wheat bran cereal.

Apricots + Almonds = A Tip-Top Ticker

This power pair helps prevents LDL “bad” cholesterol from oxidizing, a process that happens whenever LDL reacts with free radicals. “And oxidized LDL is harmful because it encourages dangerous plaque build-up in the arteries,” explains registered dietitian Elaine Magee, author of the book, Food Synergy. But, in a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers found that the phytochemicals in almonds reduced LDL oxidation when paired with the antioxidant vitamins E and C, both of which are found abundantly in apricots.
Stay-Well Strategy: For a satisfying, heart-healthy snack, combine a quarter-cup each of dried apricots and raw almonds.

Yogurt + Blueberries = A Stronger Body

Spoon up this tasty snack after a sweaty workout. The reason: Research reveals blueberries possess brain-boosting benefits to keep you better focused during your fitness routine, while yogurt’s hefty stores of protein help repair the little tears in your muscles that naturally occur during exercise. As if that's not enough, the carbs in both the yogurt and fruit naturally replenish your muscles with glycogen, a stored form of energy (dipping too low in glycogen can quickly trigger fatigue). Yogurt’s protein also stimulates a hormone that transports those energizing carbs into your muscles to give your next workout more get-up and go.
Stay-Well Strategy: If you’re doing intense exercise and need to be at the top of your game, be especially speedy about eating this recovery snack. Why? Your body’s most efficient at stashing away glycogen in the first 15 minutes after your workout, says Magee.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil + Tomatoes = Disease Defense

Tomatoes boast all four major carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene) plus three potent antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin C) that may help fight cancer and heart disease. “You’ll absorb more of these protective chemicals if you eat them with olive oil,” says Magee. “It’s high in healthy monounsaturated fats and slows digestion so you can soak up more of them.”
Stay-Well Strategy: Mix a little olive oil in your next marinara. You’ll get a bigger phytochemical punch with cooked tomatoes (leave the skin on, since it’s loaded with them). Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form, so it contains the most beneficial compounds, says Magee. Just store it away from heat and light to prevent it from going rancid.

Cinnamon + Whole Grain Toast = Increased Energy and Speedier Slimming

Sprinkling on this spice may help keep your blood sugar at a healthier level, which prevents dips in your energy and spikes in your hunger level, says Sass.  In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cinnamon was found to slow the rate of stomach emptying after meals and reduce the rise in blood sugar after meals to negate more noshing later.
Stay-Well Strategy: For a healthier version of that childhood staple, cinnamon toast, use whole grain bread, trans-free margarine and a study-backed teaspoon of cinnamon. Note: Experts say you’ll nab more protective compounds if your cinnamon is fresh: Whole sticks last up to a year, ground cinnamon for six months.

Oatmeal + Strawberries = A Healthier Heart

Oats contain two important phytochemicals called avenanthramides and phenolic acids. These compounds have been shown in research to work synergistically with vitamin C to reduce the harmful effects of “bad” LDL cholesterol and help prevent the plaque build-up that can lead to heart attacks, says Magee.
Stay-Well Strategy: Enjoy a half cup of sliced strawberries with your morning bowl of oatmeal.

Garlic + Onions = Head to Toe Protection

These aromatic veggies both contain a number of organosulfur compounds, heart-healthy plant chemicals that help keep arteries flexible and free of plaque, says Magee. Some of these compounds have even been studied for their power to detoxify carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) in the body. Eating both at the same time means you’re “covering your bases” and boosting your chances of getting more of these healthful compounds, she says.
Stay-Well Strategy: Cooked together, they make a delicious base for soups and sauces or simply sauté veggies like broccoli in a mix of olive oil, garlic, and onions.
